THE
METHOD FOR BALLET
-
What
are the elements in the Russian schooling that produce dancers of such calibre
like: Anna Pavlova, George
Balanchine, Natalia Makarova, Galina Ulanova, Maya Plissetskaya, Rudolf
Nureyev,
Michael Baryshnikov, to mention just a few?
One of the main principles of the Russian training is that of a balanced
training and carefully preserved classical heritage.
The students are taught from the very beginning the awareness of moving
the whole body as one unit, from the toes to the ends of the fingertips.
This is not to undermine other methods where main attention is focused on
the legs only and these are trained well. The
upper part of the body - the torso, head, eyes, arms and hands are often
neglected. Dance is not just a
motion of the legs and feet. It is
believed by the Russians that all movements must come from the whole body, from
the inner part of the soul. It is
technique combined with expressiveness that makes a dance and distinguishes a
dance from mere exercise.
